Mezcal Vago began with a love story: co-founder Judah Kuper walked into an Oaxacan hospital, fell for the nurse who treated him, and discovered her father, Aquilino García López, was a subsistence farmer who also made mezcal. Judah, Aquilino, and longtime friend Dylan Sloan launched the brand in 2013, and it's become one of the most respected names in agave spirits — largely because Vago puts the maestro mezcalero, not the brand, on the label. This expression comes from Joel Barriga, Aquilino's cousin, whose family has made mezcal for generations in Hacienda Tapanala, Oaxaca. Aquilino personally worked with Joel for months to refine his style before this release debuted. Espadín agave is cooked in an in-ground earthen pit, naturally fermented in wooden tanks, crushed by tahona, and double distilled in small copper pot stills — bottled at natural batch strength, generally around 50% ABV, with lot details printed right on the label. Tastings.com scored it 94 points, calling it an outstanding example of blanco mezcal that hits every herbaceous, savory, and sweet note in harmony. Expect creamy earth and spearmint on the nose, garden herbs, mint, oregano, and lemon balm balanced against caramelized agave and crème brûlée, with lime zest and limestone minerality on a long, gently smoky finish.
