There are places in Idaho where sound has to travel—or it doesn’t matter at all. The Musselshell country is one of them.
Named after a rugged stretch of land tied to early exploration in the region, the Clearwater Musselshell Elk Reed was built for distance and clarity. It delivers high volume and high pitch, making it ideal for location bugles and calf sounds that cut through wind, timber and elevation.
Sound Like a Calf That Needs Help
A distressed calf doesn’t make one short mew and stop. It calls repeatedly—with urgency and emotion—as it searches for the herd. According to elk-calling expert Joel Turner, that high-pitched calf sound can trigger a powerful “come help me” instinct in cows and bulls.
Use the Musselshell to send drawn-out cries, double mews and emotional distressed-calf sequences across distance. Cows may respond and come looking for the calf, bringing the bull with them—or a bull may approach the sound directly.
The key is to stay high and in the calf spectrum. Dropping too low can turn the sound into a mature cow vocalization and create suspicion instead of urgency. The Musselshell’s combination of high pitch and powerful volume helps those calf sounds remain clear and convincing at longer ranges.
When elk aren’t close—and you need to find them—this is the reed that gets it done. Within the Clearwater system, the Musselshell is your long-range locator tool, built to reach elk before the real work begins.
